BAAL | 22-26 Jan 2019

by BERTOLT BRECHT
Translation by PETER TEGEL

With an insatiable appetite for sex and booze, Baal lives his life for the moment. From stage to sewer he leaves a trail of devastation and recklessly dispensed lyricism in his wake.

Bertolt Brecht's first play, Baal, rages with the fire of youth. Nothing escapes young Brecht's burning wit and self-immolating irony here. An anti-hero and cult artist at odds with the world, Baal indulges in fleshy decadence spewing surreal poetry and bawdy libretto.

Drunken and depraved, he strips romanticism bare and throws it onto the shit-heap. The secretions that stain Baal's world glisten to reveal the excesses of youth and blind idolatry of creative genius.

NEXT THING YOU KNOW | 5-9 Mar 2019

Music by JOSHUA SALZMAN
Lyrics by RYAN CUNNINGHAM

Next Thing You Know (“NTYK”) is a musical about four New Yorkers waking up from their invincible twenties and confronting adulthood in the city that never sleeps. It looks at a time in life when one day you wake up, and instead of a hangover, you have a job. Instead of a fling, you have a live-in girlfriend. And instead of naïve dreams, you have reality. Think: a musical episode of How I Met Your Mother or Friends.

AFTER THE DANCE | 9-13 Apr 2019

by TERRENCE RATTIGAN

“It’s the bright young things over again, only they were never bright and now they’re not even young”

After the Dance by Terence Rattigan is a hilarious, heartbreaking and hauntingly beautiful play. Written as an attack on the hedonistic lifestyle of the ‘bright young things’ of the 1920s and 30s, the play's action takes place on the eve of the Second World War in the drawing-room of the Scott-Fowlers’ flat in Mayfair, a fashionable part of London.

Despite being a critical success when it premiered in 1938, the looming declaration of war meant it was quickly forgotten until a 2010 revival at the National Theatre brought it back to prominence.
