Brighton Beach Memoirs

By NEIL SIMON

With his mind on girls, chores and the Yankees, a pending war and the Great Depression are the least of Eugene’s worries

8-12 SEPTEMBER 2026

“How am I going to become a writer if I don’t know how to suffer? Actually, I’d give up writing if I could see a naked girl while I was eating ice cream.”

Set in New York City in 1937, Brighton Beach Memoirs is Neil Simon’s semi-autobiographical portrait of the writer as a young teen living with his family in a crowded, lower-middle-class Jewish Brooklyn household.

Eugene dreams of baseball and is trying to get his head around his new fondness for girls. But on top of that, he has to deal with the daily routine of his family life, which includes endless trips to the local store for his mom.

Rifts appear as the family feels the pressure of surviving the Great Depression and having to face the threatening political ideologies that are growing in Europe.

Reinforced by Neil Simon’s quick-witted dialogue, with his customary humour and pathos, this bittersweet coming-of-age comedy captures the day-to-day life of a struggling household in late 1930s New York.

Director Nick Mouton commented: “I’ve always been interested in life in America in the late 1930s. The nation was struggling to rebuild itself following the Wall Street crash, while in Europe the rise of fascism and divisions in political ideologies were leading to a serious threat of a second world war.

“Neil Simon has a unique ability to address sensitive and poignant issues with humour that doesn’t detract from the audience’s understanding of the gravity of the situation. His characters are full of life and hugely watchable.”

“An exquisite balance between comedy and pathos, its impeccable ensemble landing every laugh while exploring every emotional nuance to build a tremendously moving portrait of family life.”
