ABOUT THE SHOW

Welcome to the Hot Box. The lights are low, the drinks are flowing, the music is playing, and the women are running the show. In this you’re stepping inside the Hot Box, the glittering, chaotic heart of 1950s New York nightlife. This is a world of feathers, sequins, cocktails and secrets, where friendships are fierce, the stakes are high and nobody waits around for a man to make the first move.

At the heart of this Guys And Dolls are women with stories to tell. Women who have fallen in love, fallen out of it, started again, made mistakes, made money, lost money, laughed too loudly and refused to make themselves smaller. Adelaide, Sarah and the women of the Hot Box are not simply supporting players in somebody else’s story. They have their own histories, ambitions, friendships and dreams, and this production puts those stories centre stage.

Love is important, but it isn’t the only thing these women are looking for. Their relationships exist alongside friendship, independence, ambition and the simple joy of belonging somewhere. The question isn’t just will they get their man? It’s what happens when we stop making the men the destination?

From underground craps games to late-night parties, Guys And Dolls is a world of unlikely romances, ridiculous schemes and people willing to risk everything for what they want. In this version, the Hot Box is the beating heart of it all: glamorous, messy, funny, complicated and unapologetically female.

Because everyone in the Hot Box has a story. This time, we’re going to listen.

DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION IN CASTING

Sedos is committed to diversity and inclusion. Our commitment is to build and sustain a membership that is reflective of the diverse communities within London. We actively encourage all performers to audition for the roles which they feel best suit their skills. Across the entire cast there are opportunities for actors of all ages, ethnicities and genders to be cast, with the primary consideration in casting being the performers’ ability to sing and act in their assigned role. We will not be transposing any vocal lines (other than potentially changing the octave).

We strongly encourage performers of all ethnicities, genders, gender identities, sexual orientations, abilities and backgrounds to audition for Guys And Dolls. Our Hot Box is a space where gender expression is playful, fluid and unrestricted.

We actively welcome non-binary, transgender and gender-fluid performers, as well as drag performers and anyone who wants to explore gender in a way that feels exciting to them. There is room for everyone.

We want to move beyond traditional ideas of what a “gangster” or “Hot Box girl” should look like. Our world can be glamorous, camp, masculine, feminine and everything in between. What matters most is personality, individuality and the relationships you create.

Where licensing restrictions require us to retain the genders, pronouns and vocal parts of the characters as written, these will need to be respected. Within those parameters, however, we encourage performers to bring their own identity, physicality and interpretation to the roles.

If you see yourself in a character, audition for them. We are much more interested in what you can bring to the role than whether you fit a traditional image of who has played it before.

Most importantly, we want a company that feels like a vibrant, joyful community. The Hot Box belongs to everyone.
