ABOUT THE SHOW

Based on the book by Ned Vizzini, and adapted for the stage in 2015 by Joe Iconis and Joe Tracz, Be More Chill is a sci-ficomedy musical about teenagers looking for a way to fit in, with catchy tunes and a big heart at the centre. We follow Jeremy Heere, a nerdy high schooler, who implants a supercomputer called a “Squip” in his brain to become popular, only to discover it may cost him his free will.

In 2026, this show feels more resonant than ever. With AI assistants popping up everywhere to do your homework, write your emails, or even be a friend or romantic partner, Be More Chill explores what could happen if you relinquish control. What do you gain? And what do you lose?

The majority of the characters in Be More Chill are teenagers, and while we appreciate that playing a teen on stage is not for everyone, we’ve all been teenagers; we’ve all felt that pressure to fit in and the desire to be something different from what we are at some point in our lives. The song “Michael in the Bathroom” in particular has become an anthem for the anxious among us and speaks to that deep rooted fear of not quite belonging or being left behind by friends on different paths.

For our production of Be More Chill, we aim to lean into the video game aesthetics present in the script and score. With exciting lighting design and a set inspired by games such as “Beat Saber” and movies like “Tron”, we want to create a visually exciting show that transports the audience right into the pixelated world of the Squip.

The music of Be More Chill melds contemporary musical theatre with elements of 80s horror and sci-fimovie soundtracks. This is a score that incorporates a lot of weird and wacky elements, such as a theremin and vocoder, as well as some video game style sound effects. Take a listen to the 2019 Broadway cast recording of Be More Chill here.

The movement in this production will also lean into a very contemporary musical style (think Mean Girls, Beetlejuice or Legally Blonde). If you’ve got a background in commercial, MT jazz or jazz funk, you'll feel right at home, though dancers and strong movers of all styles are very much welcome. What really brings this style of dance to life is full performance: expression, characterisation and acting through movement matter just as much as technique.

Be More Chill features 10 named roles in a variety of genders, and for this production we are adding an ensemble of eight dancers. There will be plenty of roles for comedic musical theatre performers, as well as opportunities for dancers and strong movers.

CASTING | DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION

Sedos is committed to diversity and inclusion. Our commitment is to build and sustain a membership that is reflective of the diverse communities within London. We actively encourage all performers to audition for the roles which they feel best suit their skills.

All roles in Be More Chill are open to performers of all ethnicities and backgrounds. Some costume or pop-culture references within the show are intended as theatrical homage rather than literal impersonation and are not intended to limit casting inclusivity.

There are some roles with specific requirements as to playing age. These are specified in the role breakdowns in the full audition notice.

Some roles require a particular gender presentation (as written in the script), again specified in the role breakdown below – anyone can audition for these roles, provided they are comfortable portraying that gender. The Squip is traditionally played by a male presenting performer. However, the script allows the “default mode” of the Squip to be adjusted, so we are keen to see performers of all genders for this role.

We welcome performers of all abilities and backgrounds and encourage anyone interested in the production to come forward and show us the best of what they can do. Be More Chill is, however, a physically demanding show with a significant movement component throughout rehearsals and performance, and auditionees should consider the physical requirements of the production when applying.

We are committed to creating an environment where everyone can thrive. If you require support or reasonable adjustments at any stage, from the audition application and auditions through to rehearsals and the production period, we are very happy to discuss these with you. Auditionees are encouraged to let the production team know about any adjustments, access requirements or support needs that may help them perform at their highest standard, and the team will look to accommodate these wherever reasonably practicable within the creative and physical requirements of the production.

Our team is supported by accessibility consultant Ema‑Mae West (BSc Intellectual Disability Nursing, MSc Autism), a Neurodiversity Specialist with Mental Health First Aid and ASIST prevention training. With her guidance, we aim to ensure that our processes are inclusive, flexible, and responsive to individual needs. If you’d like to talk about adjustments or support, please feel free to reach out at any point in the process (bemorechill@sedos.co.uk). Any access discussions will be treated sensitively and only shared where necessary to support the process.
